ALVA Museum Replica Gold Roman Coin of Emperor Valentinian I Restorer of the Commonwealth Pin Brooch. The pin is marked “Alva Museum Replicas” and comes with the original Alva gift box and paperwork. This pin has been well-maintained and cared for over the years. It is in excellent vintage condition. Solidus of the Emperor Valentinian I (364-375 AD) The original is a gold coin struck at Rome at a time when the capital of the Roman Empire was Constantinople. “Solidus” is at the root of our word “soldier” by way of the meaning of the Medieval French form of the Latin word. On the obverse – is the profile portrait of the Emperor, crowned with a diadem, his mantle fastened with a jeweled brooch. The inscription, with the usual abbreviations gives his name ant titles which by that time had become conventionalized attributes of his high office — DN (Dominus Noster – Our Lord) Valentiniansvs PF (Pius Felix – upright, fortunate) AUG (Augustus – Majestic). On the reverse – is the standing figure of the Emperor in the short tunic of a warrior, holding a vexillium (military standard) in one hand and in the other a small image of Victory poised on a globe. The inscription: Restitvtor Rei Pvblicae (Restorer of the commonwealth). The translations are only approximations in our modern language which cannot duplicate concisely the implied meaning of the Latin text. Athorized, copyrighted reproduction made from the original at the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, Md. , in metal, gold electroplated, by Alva Museum Replicas, Inc. Long Island City, New York.
