eBay Tubular-steel framed, aluminum handle metalworker’s handsaw, circa 1965, for cutting wood, metal, carbon fiber, PVC, and plastics. DESCRIPTION — This tool appeared in the manufacturer’s catalog simply as “No. 101 — All Metal Handsaw.” The tubular frame makes it a surprisingly sturdy yet still lightweight saw. It’s beefy enough to use as a bow saw, too, with the appropriate blade. The aluminum handle’s grip is surprisingly comfortable. Three adjustment holes in the tubular frame accommodate blades of 10, 11, and 12 inches. While this hacksaw may appeal to tool enthusiasts and collectors, it would be an asset to any metalworker’s or handyman’s toolbox. Despite having lost its chrome plating and having acquired a natural “browning” over the years, the saw remains in perfect working condition and will serve its user well for another generation or two. MANUFACTURE — GLOBEMASTER opened its offices in 1961, and then moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Houston, Texas in 1967. It was in operation until the mid-1970s, outsourcing most of its tool production to far-East manufacturers. Rarely will one encounter a GLOBEMASTER No. 101 Made in USA hacksaw; Internet searches turned up no others. The company may have contracted with Perber (USA) and Hudson (Japan) to private-label its GLOBEMASTER NO. 101. You’ll find Perber clones occasionally listed on eBay, though Hudson No. 28 replicas are uncommon. The saw is virtually identical to a Vintage 1960’s Eclipse no. 20T Tubular Pattern Hacksaw. SPECS — The frame and handle add another six inches to blade length, making the overall length 16, 17, or 18 inches. The saw measures 6 inches tall. It weighs 1 pound, 5 ounces with a 12-inch blade. NOTE — This saw was lightly steel-brushed, wiped clean, and oiled to inhibit oxidation. Some surface oxidation remains. The tube could be sanded, steel-wooled- and polished to a bright steel finish and either waxed or re-chromed. The hacksaw blade is not original, as users customarily buy replacement blade packs and discard blades that become dull with use. Color of handle and frame are as accurate as variations in monitors, view screens, and lighting allow.
