PORTRAIT in F SHARPPLAYED BY HAROLD BAUER Harold Bauer (born April 28, 1873, Kingston-on-Thames, near London, Eng.—died March 12, 1951, Miami, Fla., U.S.) was a British-born American pianist who introduced to the United States works by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and César Franck. His playing combined traits of both 19th-century Romanticism and 20th-century restraint and was noted for its sensitivity, free approach to the printed note, and lack of egocentricity. Bauer was originally a concert violinist until about age 19, when he began serious study of the piano; in both instruments he was almost completely self-taught. He toured widely from 1893 and became a U.S. citizen in 1921. COMPOSED BY ANTON RUBINSTEINAnton Grigoryevich Rubinstein was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein, who founded the Moscow Conservatory. As a pianist, Rubinstein ranks among the great 19th-century keyboard virtuosos88 NOTE Aeolian Hand-Played Rolls Full Scale Themodist rolls produced in London UK by the AEOLIAN COMPANY These quality hand-played rolls had much more information recorded on them than arranged rolls. They were recorded using a perforating machine that was connected to a piano Many famous pianists would sit at the piano and “hand-play” a piece of music, and the connected machine would record that pianist’s performance onto a piano roll. A roll editor or producer would note dynamic and sometimes tempo changes from the recorded performance, and then print these changes onto the perforated roll. This master roll with markings as well as perforations would then be copied and sold, often marketed with the performing pianist’s name attached. Player pianists could purchase the roll and perform it themselves, using either their own interpretation of the music, or the recording pianist’s interpretations as marked.
