Aviation Space Rockets 1958 Brushed Aluminum Ashtray Marquardt Aircraft Van Nuys Historic American Aeronautics / Aviation Collectibles from Saturday’s Toys presents… a hand-crafted golden colored metal ashtray, created at Southern California’s Marquardt Aircraft Co. during the late 1950’s. Measures approx. 3.75″ x 4.5″; with embossed aviation logo impressed within the metal. Created and used prior to Marquardt’s name change to “Marquardt Corporation” in 1959. Created at Marquardt’s headquarters in Van Nuys, California. They clearly had the facilities to create unique items from space-age materials… and this was no exception… as they equipped offices and break rooms with aluminum ashtrays for employee use. These rare examples would have never been intended for sale on the open market. Features a unique rocket logo… announcing their rapid expansion during the USA’s “space race” with new plants in Ogden, Utah… and Pomona, California. MARQUARDT COMPANY TIMELINE: Roy Edward Marquardt, 1940 graduate of CalTech, is employed at Northrup during WWII on the YB-35 flying-wing bomber project. It was while working on that project that Marquardt discovered the “ramjet principle” and in 1944 he founded Marquardt Aircraft Co. in Venice, California to develop and sell ramjet engines (hello, Operator?… Uncle Sam calling for Roger Ramjet!) Having quickly outgrown their facility in Venice, the company moved to the former Timm Aircraft factory in 1949 (adjacent to the Van Nuys Airport). With their successful testing of the X-7 missile, the company joined with the Air Force in 1957 to expand manufacturing to a new plant at Ogden, Utah (near the Great Salt Lake). The following year, in 1958, Marquardt purchased the Associated Missile Products Company (AMPCO) in Pomona, California. It was at that facility that they developed the GAM-72 (Quail) decoy missile; and the GAM-77 (Hound Dog) nuclear missile. By 1959, with their continued rapid expansion into developing rocket technology (rocket thrusters), engines for the Apollo space program (and later with a major contract with the Space Shuttle project), Marquardt Aircraft changed their name to the Marquardt Corporation. As such, this tray would have been in use by Marquardt Aircraft Co. employees during 1958 – 1959. Indeed, an often-overlooked leader in America’s space race… and a major participant in Southern California’s space-age technological advances.
