Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series US33821Republic P-47D Thunderbolt Diecast ModelUSAAF 353rd FG, 350th FS, “Maggie”, Kenneth Chetwood, RAF Raydon, England, June 1944Limited Edition 1710 Pieces Worldwide1:72 Scale PLEASE READ – all photos shown are the ACTUAL MODEL THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE (these are not stock photos or pirated from another eBay listing!). While some of the models are new (never removed from the box) most of the models that I am selling have been displayed in a relatively dust-free cabinet and all are completely intact (no missing parts) – that is, most of them ARE IN NEAR NEW SHAPE. ALL HAVE BOXES (in most cases they are in good to great shape – if not, it will be noted). I have included numerous photos showing the models from various angles, along with the boxes. I tend to take the photos so they area a bit over-exposed because I believe that increased exposure better accentuates the detail (and any potential flaws). If there are issues with any of the models, this information will be included in this description. A final word – I have been collecting diecast models for many years, always with the goal of displaying them in their full glory. Unfortunately, due to a Parkinson’s diagnosis, I am now forced to sell my collections. If you are looking for a model that you want to keep in the box and put it in the closet to sell as new later, and want the internal packaging to be exactly as it was sent out by the manufacturer, these may not be the models for you. This is especially true for the Dragon Models, which tend to have more fiddly bits that are more challenging to return to pre-opening (new) placement. That said, the Corgi airplanes are much easier to put back in their clam shell enclosures, so in many cases you would not know if they were new or not.The only thing that may be different with a Corgi that has been displayed, is the small plastic bag that contains the small bits (e.g., landing gears, landing gear covers, drop tanks, etc.) attached to the model may be in the same bag that has been sealed at one end with a piece of tape or may have been replaced by a minute zip-lock bag to keep all the “fiddly bits” together. Republic P-47D Thunderbolt One of the first “bubbletop” P-47Ds received by the 353rd FG, this aircraft was delivered to the group’s Raydon base on the eve of D-Day, June 6th 1944. It was assigned to 1st Lt. Kenneth Chetwood, who was universally known as “Choo Choo” to his squadron mates because of his penchant for shooting German trains. This was the last of five P-47s assigned to Chetwood. The fighter remained with the 350th FS until its conversion to Mustangs in October 1944. It was salvaged the following month.Designed by Alexander Kartveli meeting a USAAC requirement for a heavy fighter, the P-47 was first flown on May 6th, 1941. Later models featured a “bubble-top” canopy rather than the sharply peaked “razorback” fuselage which resulted in poor visibility for the aircraft’s pilot. The P-47, a deadly pursuit aircraft, featured 8 x 12.7mm machine guns; all mounted in the wings. Even with the complicated turbo-supercharger system, the sturdy airframe and tough radial engine, the P-47 (“Jug” or “Juggernaut” as it was nicknamed) could absorb damage and still return home. Built in greater quantities than any other US fighter, the P-47 was the heaviest single-engine WWII fighter and the first piston-powered fighter to exceed 500 mph. Corgi’s 1:72 scale P-47 series includes both the “razorback” and “bubble-top” canopy styles, with separate castings for each fuselage. The models in this series are constructed almost entirely of diecast metal with only the smallest amount of plastic used. Details of the radial engine and air intake are visible inside the oval engine cowling. The turbo-supercharger exhaust vent and separately applied intercooler exit doors are nicely detailed at the rear of the fuselage. Each release in the series includes different weapons ordnance or external fuel tanks. The four staggered machine gun barrels that protrude from each of the wings’ leading edges are constructed of rigid plastic, and there are shell casing vents below each wing.
