Unique Victorian-era pickle castor on a silver plated stand made by Wilcox Silver Plate Company. This is special for a few reasons – The cranberry glass is a beautiful, rich color that seems to change from a darker maroon to a lighter purple as the jar is moved. A silver-plated collar perfectly sits on the glass rim and has two protrusions that nestle the jar between the two metal supports of the handle. This keeps the jar firmly seated in the stand. There is matching decoration on the base of the stand and the collar, which visually looks stunning. This is rare and I have not seen this on another castor.The cranberry glass features an inverted coin dot pattern (common) but also four large dimples in the middle of the glass body. This is uncommon and adds to the visual appeal of the glass.One side of the cranberry glass is painted with a lovely scene of brown leaves and flowers connected by orange stems. These are very unusual colors for a decoration, as most are brighter flowers and greenery. The brown and orange have a subtle “pop” that stands out.Lastly, the stand sits on four metal lions feet, which are ornately attached to the base.The stand is silver-plated and features classy raised designs on the base and collar. There is additional decoration on the handle and sides, which carries through to the tongs and handle on the lid. Very nice. The base is stamped on the bottom and shows “Cox Silver Plate Quadruple Plate”. The complete name is Wilcox Silver Plate Co. and can be identified by the trademark crossed hammers in the center. The Wilcox Silver Plate Co. was founded in 1865 as the Wilcox Britannia Co. by Jedediah and Horace Wilcox, and a handful of others. The name was changed to Wilcox Silver Plate Co. in 1867. It was acquired by the International Silver Company in 1898. The entire stand is just over 11 inches tall.
