Antique Edme Samson Meissen Taste figure This great piece in the Meissen style is most likely by Samson. Edme Samson began his career in the 1830’s in Paris and was a famous Copyist of Museum Quality items. His works have since become collectible in their own right. Stunningly executed with a Porcelaneous body and exceptional detail. Incised “1452 a g ” to base as well as crossed Meissen Marcolini dot mark. The bottom Meissen mark and incised numbers are very convincing, sadly the details aren’t quite what they should be on a piece of this caliber. Very heavy, weighs about 4.4 pds. Approx 7.5″H X 10″W. Based on a piece by Kandler in the 1740’s. Unfortunately it lacks some of the fine details that you would expect of a piece like this. The “pug” was the biggest giveaway to start me down the reproduction rabbit hole. The ‘Order of the Pug’ was a type of Masonic society founded in 1740 by Klemens August of Bavaria after the Pope forbade Catholics from becoming Freemasons in 1738. The Society’s symbol was the pug dog (or Mops in German) which stood for loyalty, fidelity and steadfastness. Unlike the Masons at the time, it was also notable in that they allowed women to become members, providing they were Catholics. Although the Order was supposed to be a secret society, the Meissen modeller Kändler made many different models of pugs and figures holding pug dogs, presumably reflecting its popularity during the 1740s. Condition: Restoration to break in neck and removal of cross to neckline, break to gentleman’s arm, professional restoration to hand by mouth, something altered by hand, otherwise minor imperfections to be expected.
