Circle of Henry Nelson O’Neil, ‘Home Again’, Fine 19th Century Antique Oil Painting, Ex Christie’s A fine oil on mahogany panel evocation of Henry ONeil’s original painting, ‘Home Again’. An almost exact copy of O’Neil’s famous work, thought to be contemporary to the artist and of his circle, depicting soldiers disembarking from a troopship at Gravesend, returning from the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1859. There are some lovely details in the present work, note if you will the wounded sergeant being assisted down the companion ladder, the young private of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps proudly holding out his Victoria Cross to his mother, another soldier holding his baby for the first time and with some fine detail of the nautical paraphernalia, the ship’s rigging, the anchor and the suspended lifeboat. The image dimensions are approximately: 7” x 5 1/4” (18cm x 13.5cm). In good condition, apparently unsigned, housed in an ebonised frame, ready to hang. Verso with Christie’s stencil and old description label. Provenance: In my own collection, formerly with Christie’s and latterly with a private family collection in Surrey, England.
