Thenew 200 is actually an outgrowth ofthe earlier 1 80 A small displacementincrease has taken place., but basi-cally, the power plants are identicalPerhaps this is good. The earlier1 80 was absolutely reliable almost toa fault One Cycle Guide staff memberrode a 1 80 for a long time and literallythrashed the daylights out of it for ayear. The only maintenance to thebike was replacement of the sparkplugs each several thousand miles.The bike ran beautifully.Another outstanding feature of that180 was its stopping ability from 50to 60 miles per hour. Perhaps ourearlier bike was exceptional, but thenew 200 did not perform as well,though the brakes were quite ade-quate for what the motorcycle wasdesigned to doThe engine drops a fair amount ofpower and we found it necessary toget the revs around 4,000 before thepower plant was capable of puttingout enough power for us to pull awayfrom a stoplight smoothly withoutlugging the engine.Like many Yamahas, the 200 hasan electric starter and starting the bikehot or cold is incredibly fast. Merelypush the choke lever down, take astab at the starter button located nextto the throttle and the engine is run-ning. You will never sit there grindingit over.The engine has a relatively low po-Styling and finish is good. Forthe money, and consideringwhat it was designed to do,the Yamaha 200 is a goodinvestment.sition and the majority of mass islocated low in the frame, causing thebike to feel considerably lighter thanit really is. While a largermotorcycle will deliver more perfor-mance, we found, surprisingly that 90percent of the time, the 200 morethan filled the bill. Acceleration isquite good and top speed is a ratherstartling 80 mph.The Yamaha 200’s small size isvery deceptive. There are a few con-siderably larger displacement ma-chines which will not deliver muchmore performance. We would suspectthat with a bit of work, an honest 1 00mph could be gotten from the 200without a great deal of effort andexpense.There is no question that Yamahahas a fantastically wide range of ex-perience when it comes to designingtwin cylinder, two stroke plants forboth road and competition usage.Past racing successes of the 250 and350 twins are now legendary. No onecan argue with the success story Ya-maha has written on the record bookpages during the last decade. Muchof this racing experience is incorpo-rated into the 200’s design. The basicengine design layout resembles thelarger displacement twin cylinderracers. There is even a strong familyresemblance from the outside.Also, the engine’s staying power isanother surprise.
