He is regarded as ancient Rome’s greatest scholar, and was described by Petrarch as “the third great light of Rome” (after Virgil and Cicero). This edition, published in 1573 by Henri Estienne in Geneva, showcases Varro’s contributions to various fields, including linguistics and agriculture. Varro’s works are esteemed for their depth of knowledge and scholarly insight. In this collection, readers will find Varro’s writings on Latin language and grammar, particularly his “De lingua Latina,” which explores the intricacies of the Latin language. In his sole complete work, “Rerum rusticarum libri tres” (“Three Books on Agriculture”), Varro’s expertise is hailed as “the well-digested system of an experienced and successful farmer.” Notably, he anticipated microbiology and epidemiology, cautioning against swamps and marshlands where invisible airborne creatures could enter the body through the mouth and nose, causing serious diseases. Enhanced with commentaries by Joseph Scaliger, Adriani Turnebi and Petri Victorii, this edition offers a wealth of scholarly annotations to accompany Varro’s original texts. One volume of 18 x 12 cm., comprising five parts bound together, featuring varying pagination, totaling approximately 875 pages. Unfortunately, the half title pages are missing. Text in Latin. Wear on the spine, and the joints show signs of cracking. However, the remainder of the book is in very good condition. The back flyleaf contains an antique manuscript annotation in the French language, adding a unique historical touch to this remarkable volume.
